Vallejo’s artful documentary embodies the multifaceted layers of the human condition. This evocative capacity turns “Light Memories” into a vulnerable, relatable and nuanced depiction of life’s ups and downs. Certainly, the interplay of light and darkness next to the soundtrack, [...], amplifies the expressiveness of the filmed material, making it at times, an almost abstract portrayal of the complexities of family ties.
Fittingly, both [Vallejo Prut's] still- and moving-image work are rendered so warm and vivid by his grasp of how to play with light, making Light Memories one of the most expertly lensed personal documentaries of this year and a masterclass in gorgeous, yet never flashy, cinematography.
“Light Memories” admirably doesn’t push its incisive searching. It’s girdled by a softness of being, a compassionate consideration of the trauma and hurt that’s rekindled in the process of digging. [...] “Light Memories” understands soul-searching intimately and powerfully.
“Light Memories” is a deeply intimate documentary exploring the pain of familial silence, told through incredibly immersive and impressive technical achievement: the composition and color grading of each scene dazzle at each step and make it a visceral, eye-feast viewing. It is the most gorgeously lensed documentary I’ve seen this year.
